6-mile circular from Aberchwiler, near Denbigh. 450m climb.

A short but strenuous walk that should have been longer but was terminated slightly early due to dramatic thunder and lightning, Takes in a less than completely familiar part of Offa's Dyke Path. Lovely grassy paths and fantastic views along the ridge.

The High Weald Landscape Trail. 8.3 miles circular from Selsfield Common, West Sussex. 180m climb

Wooded paths leading to open common land and the grounds of Gravetye Manor, with views to the North Downs. Close to the interesting town of East Grinstead.

Halkyn Mountain 7.5 miles 200m climb

Starting from Rhosesmor.  A strange landscape scarred with capped mineshafts and bell pits left over from the entrance to mines.  Very easy to get lost or at least diverge from the intended path as there are so many paths to choose from, only a few of which are on the OS map.  Great views of the Clwydians and over to snow-capped Snowdonia. Completed the afternoon with a walk on the outer walls of Moel y Gaer: a whole mile in circumference.

Llanferres, Bryn Alun and Nercwys Mountain. 7.6 miles, 300m

At last, back into Wales. Farewell (and thanks) to Wirral and Cheshire, but this is now proper walking country. We start with this old favourite but with a new add-on at the far point: Nercwys Mountain and the square lake.

Beeston Castle to Peckforton Castle, Cheshire, circular. 5.5 miles. 95m.

A few good gradients, including Burwardsley Hill, with great views of both castles on their respective mounds dominating the landscape across winter-ploughed fields. Panoramas of both Wales and Wirral. Pass an ancient oak tree where John Wesley was reputed to have preached and the tiny ancient cottages of Peckforton Village.  Some nice derelict farm equipment to be found too.

Eddisbury Fort from Pale Heights; return via Primrose Hill, Cheshire. 6.7 miles, 150m.

Still restricted to quite close to home. Not too strenuous, taking in part of the Sandstone Trail and the very interesting and deserted Iron Age fort. Superb views in all directions.
